Minyon Falls lookout in the Nightcap National Park is easily accessible via a short walkway and overhangs a valley bursting with palms and a 100m waterfall. Take a gentle 4km (round trip) walk to the base of Minyon Falls in the Nightcap National Park. Watch the vegetation change as you wind your way down to the bottom of the valley. The crystal waters of the rock pool are the perfect backdrop for a picnic. The only interruption will be the shrill calls of the whip birds and lorikeets.
Rocky Creek Dam, near Dunoon, features picnic tables and toilet facilities. The water catchment for the area provides a stunning backdrop. Remember to bring plenty of food - you may end up sharing with large goannas and kookaburras!
Driving along the 30km Whian Whian Forest Drive (unsealed), you will see giant tree ferns and Blackbean trees and the scenic Rummery Park. There are many koalas in the area and if you drive slowly you may just see one. Look out for the whip bird, a secretive and delicate bird with white and black markings and a call that is instantly recognisable. Listen for the rosella, a colourful parrot whose call is similar to the ring of a mobile phone.
Along Federal Drive, you will come across the Honey Stall offering tubs of locally made honey at bargain prices. You will also come across fruit stalls selling lemons, herbs, peaches and homemade items.
Chat to a local and they will guide you to a local swimming hole. They are often happy to share their knowledge but would prefer if not too many people were in on the secret!
